Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress in order for them to be able to survive. Ruth grew in a poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She was a student in Boston. She only attended school for two years before going on to pursue an acting profession. The path she chose was filled with problems. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to get opportunities in the stage. The next position she was offered was a "hat check" lady at a club but she quit and returned to Boston. In Boston, when she worked at evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time as an usherette. Her studies in drama led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
